This happens to be a little too bright for my tastes, so I cut off a bit of the low frequencies. The first thing I look at is the transient shaper. Depending on how I’ve shaped my track or what I’m wanting to do, I will either leave the peak at its natural level, followed by a rapid decrease, or set it high at the beginning, watch the response, and then bring it down again. I often adjust the gain reduction as well – for some effects, I might use a breakpoint to get rid of plink or other unwanted transient information.
So there I am, sitting at the keyboard, wondering what the heck to do with all these effects given how simple my tracks generally sound. The answer is simple: I treat them like plugins. If I insert a plugin like Ozone 9, as long as I don’t overdo it, I’ll likely find the right balance. This may require a few iterations, and this is where having a great set of ears comes in handy.
This can happen in Neutron 2, but it’s accelerated by having all the spaces to do it in Ozone 9. Without multi-band compression, it’s hard to get a good sense of how much compression I need on a track. I often find I have too much in Neutron 2, and there’s no reason why you can’t try it in Ozone 9 and get more than you need.
There’s a lot going on in Neutron 2’s default interface, and to really see everything one must dig into the Parameters section and work with many of the sliders, making them as typical as possible. Usually, I’ll start with the EQ, then add the transient shaper, followed by the EQ, the compressor, and the exciter. This is also why I really like hitting Neutron 2 in Multiband mode, which separates the EQ into both bands.
