A more indirect and hard to assess measure, also using the excretion ratio, was chosen for TBM in the posterior approach: the annual excretion percentage (AEPC): AEPC was back-estimated from a data set of 31 studies published between 2000 and 2011 (only 16.7% of the available studies did not report on TBM) and adjusted for a parameter that represents the temporal variation of the excretion percentage (data not shown). The value of the parameter, estimated as the mean of the various reported AEPCs during a two-month period at the peak of the flux, was approximately 5%. The annual excretion was estimated as follows: annual excretion per capita = TBM (EF * AEPC * (EF – 1) * period of application of maslinic acid / 2)).

The values of disaggregated treatments were then calculated from treatment transfers (see, for example, OECD, 2000). Because the considered studies report the treatments as applied on a number of land surfaces, treatment volumes were aggregated into four classes (open, forested, agricultural and peri-urban) and averaged. The volume of irrigation water used to apply liming (0.1 Mg ha-1 of KCl) or removal of carbonates (0.9 Mg ha-1 of CaCO3) was not included in the analysis, because the land use for this type of treatment was not sufficiently reported in the literature. For the analysis with the short-term approach, treatment volumes in a year were treated individually and added up considering the dominant uses of slakes and manure fertilizers in irrigated agriculture. Each slake residue (17,500 t/year) was created by the 2017 slaking of 2 × 20 installations with 8,000 t each and an activity factor of 1. Hence: slake water use in 2017 = 21,800,000 m3 of wastewater.

The migration potential of BEG, CBZ, COC and MET in sewer networks has been dealt by McMahon et al. (2018), Kann et al. (2018) and Gautret et al. (2018, 2019). Thiebault et al. (2017) developed new models to assess TMT and KTP sewer migration. Age-dependent transfer rates from wastewater to receiving waters were estimated following the methodology of Dehouck et al. (2010) and were combined with pollutant concentration in the sewer over time. The following equations were used to represent the sewer network:
