What is a Recovered Sector? Most of the time this sector is inaccessible to the OS due the bad sector listed in the Map, and the physical disk is not accessible by the controller. For those sectors, the drive head stops over the sector and issues the SCSI RESET command. The issue typically happens when a damaged sector is located near the beginning or the end of the drive and can not be repaired. This is referred to as a Ruptured Sector. With the increased storage density, Read heads are getting smaller so the possibility of defects rises when customer’s drives are dropped, bumped, or cleaned with harsh chemicals. A Recovered Sector is when a drive is performing a self-test during start up. To prepare the drive for the test, the drive is entered into RESET mode in which the drive performs a series of test commands. The number of tests varies by drive manufacturer but most drives perform three or four tests. The first test checks for alignment defects. This usually does not identify any defects and completes quickly. The second test checks for the Hall sensor to align properly. This test can take up to several minutes to complete. The final test checks for defects in the magnetically encoded logic that determines if the drive responds to read commands. This test could last several hours.
