Stanley. Ten artists donated pieces to the museum, and the combination of the art and building has now become an internationally known venue for visual arts. The building is a good example of traditional design for an art museum, a style that was popular at the time the building was constructed. The architects, George W. Kelham, Sr. and George W. Kelham, Jr., who also designed the Capitol building and the Y.M.C.A. building in Washington D.C., are credited with designing the building and were awarded the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal in 1961. In 1961, a report was prepared for the new Marysville City Hall, and the report noted that a “public function now predominates in the art museum building on the north bank of the canal.”

The museum’s permanent collections represent a wide range of artistic styles, genres, movements, and artistic media. There are over 30,000 objects and works of art on permanent display. The collections are currently made up of notable contemporary and historical objects, works of art of the collection’s founders, photographs, and archival photographs.

The Pacific Museum of Art’s collections include a large contingent of Asian and Pacific Northwest art objects. The museum’s collection of Asian art and objets d’art, about 20,000 pieces, was built up largely through the generosity of two Marysville residents, Mrs. Ella Gardner Pratt and Anna Gardner Pratt, founders of the Marysville Museum of Art. The collection contains a very fine collection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ceramics, especially porcelains and pottery, although it also has objects of many other Asian countries as well as of Africa and the Americas.

The museum’s holdings of Native American art are among the best in the United States. The museum also has the largest collection of art of Central and South America, as well as East and Southeast Asia, which is likely to grow as the museum completes its acquisition program.
