We know this by now. As storms grow more violent each year, our ability to deny the poisoning, which gives life to these increasingly violent storms, slowly diminishes. In the face of this grim future of our own creation, we somehow manage to find reasons to go on; to not just endure, but to live.
In At Night He Lifts Weights, Kang Young-sook has captured a sense of social and individual unease, touching on a wide range of topics from labor unrest and government corruption to protests and demonstrations. These issues form the backdrop of the collection and reflect the lived experiences of Koreans, especially those navigating the complexities of the 2000s and 2010s. For readers familiar with Korean history, they evoke painful periods such as the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis or the suicide of former Korean president Roh Moo-hyun in 2009.
Translating from Korean to English presents unique challenges, often stemming from fundamental differences between the two languages. One of the most notable disparities lies in the default sentence structures. Korean usually follows a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) pattern, while English typically uses a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order. Korean writers often exploit this to great effect, creating a sense of delayed payoff at the end of their sentences. Replicating this effect in English can be difficult, as the natural structure of an English sentence tends to resist such a setup.
The challenge, then, is to find creative ways to present information in English that achieve a similar impact. If you reveal the punchline too early in a sentence, the tension that keeps readers engaged slackens, and the narrative can fall flat. This is true not just for the overall pacing of a story, but also at the sentence level. Finding a way to balance this when the inherent sentence structures of Korean and English are so different is a challenge I find myself pondering these days.

I study natural populations of arthropod vectors. Population Biology, Ecology and Evolution is particularly critical for disease vectors because, even in a single town, populations with limited gene flow show phenotypic differences important for public health and pest management. I am particularly interested in population divergence, dispersal, genetic variations associated with epidemiologically important phenotypes such as insecticide resistance and pathogen resistance. These aspects are critical in translating basic research of ecology and evolution to applied vector control efforts including the use of genetically altered mosquitoes. Dispersal has particular importance to innovative pest management strategies such as genetic biocontrol.
My work involves next generation sequencing and big data analysis, most often combined with more traditional marker-based genotyping of large numbers of samples from natural populations for validation and generalization. Using a combination of genomics and bioinformatics tools, I develop multi-detection assays for species and hybrid identification, pathogen detection, chromosome inversion genotyping, and blood source detection for various insect species groups. My current research focus centers around arbovirus vectors such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus worldwide, and malaria vectors such as Anopheles squamosus in southern Africa.
I have extensive research mentoring experience for undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Many of my trainees including international scholars have published peer-reviewed articles with me. The majority (86%) of my undergraduate trainees published at least one peer-reviewed publication with me (mean 1.64 pubs/student). Many (64%) of my graduate students had at least one peer-reviewed publication (mean 2.3 pubs/student). Most (92%) of my postdoc trainees have publications with me (mean 4.7 pubs/postdoc). I welcome enthusiastic students interested in integrative approach in solving complex problem of vector-borne diseases.

Hermann seems to have devoted himself to the creation ofa permanent union of the tribes he had commanded. We mayguess, but can not assert, that his object was to establish a nationalorganization like that of Rome, and in doing this hemust have come into conflict with laws and customs which wereconsidered sacred by the people. But his remaining days weretoo few for even the beginning of a task which included suchan advance in the civilization of the race. We only know thathe was waylaid and assassinated by members of his own familyin the year 21. He was then 37 years old and had been forthirteen years the leader of his people.[A]
When we meet the Germans at the close of the third centurywe are surprised to find that the tribal names which they borein the time of Hermann have nearly all disappeared, andnew names of wider significance have taken their places. Insteadof thirty to forty petty tribes, they are now consolidatedinto four chief nationalities with two or three inferior, but independentbranches. Their geographical situation is no longerthe same, migrations have taken place, large tracts of territoryhave changed hands, and many leading families have beenoverthrown and new ones arisen. Nothing but the constantclash of arms could have wrought such change. As each ofthese new nationalities plays a prominent part in the followingcenturies, a short description of them is given:
The proximity of the Romans on the Rhine, the Danube, andthe Neckar, had by degrees effected alterations in the mannersof the Germans. They had become acquainted with many newthings, both good and bad. By means of the former they becameacquainted with money, and even luxuries. The Romanshad planted the vine on the Rhine, and constructed roads,cities, manufactories, theaters, fortresses, temples, and altars.Roman merchants brought their wares to Germany, and fetchedthence amber, feathers, furs, slaves, and the very hair of theGermans; for it became the fashion to wear light flaxen wigs,instead of natural hair. Of the cities which the Romans builtthere are many yet remaining, as Salzburg, Ratisbonne, Augsburg,Basle, Strasburg, Baden, Spires, Worms, Metz, Treves,Cologne, Bonn, etc. But in the interior of Germany, neitherthe Romans nor their habits and manners had found friends,nor were cities built there according to the Roman style.[D]
The fourth century of our era and the first half of the fifthwere characterized by the spirit of migration among all thepeoples beyond the Rhine. Representatives of every Germanvillage and district went to Rome, and each brought backstories of the wealth and luxury that existed there. They hadthe keen perception and the strength to recognize the increasingweakness of the government, and also to despise the enervationand corruption of its citizens. The German was ambitiousand restless as daily he regarded Rome more and more ashis prey. The Romans themselves saw the danger of the Empireand lived in apprehension of overwhelming incursionslong before they came. In the latter part of the fourth centurythe great impulse was given to the people of northern and easternEurope by successive invasions from Asia; and a vast andgeneral movement began among them which resulted in thedisintegration of the Roman Empire, and the transfer of theprincipal arena of history from the shores of the MediterraneanSea to the countries in which the great powers of modernEurope afterward grew up. The first impulse to this series ofevents was given by disturbances and migrations in centralAsia, of whose cause hardly anything is known. Long beforethe Christian era there was a powerful race of Huns in northeasternAsia who became so dangerous to the Chinese that thegreat wall of China was built as a defense against them (finishedB. C. 244).[E]
These Huns, a Mongol race, had migrated from the center ofAsia westward three-quarters of a century previously (A. D.375), carrying death and devastation on their path. They hadnothing in common with the peoples of the West, either in facialfeatures or habits of life. Contemporary historians describethem as surpassing by their savagery all that can be imagined.They were of low stature, with broad shoulders, thick-set limbs,flat noses, high cheek-bones, small eyes deeply sunk in thesockets, and yellow complexion. Ammianus Marcellinus comparesthem, in their monstrous ugliness, to beasts walking ontwo legs, or the grinning heads clumsily carved on the posts ofbridges. They had no beard, because from infancy their faceswere hideously scarred by being slashed all over, in order tohinder its growth. Accustomed to lead a wandering life intheir native country, these wild hordes traversed the Steppes,or boundless plains which lie between Russia and China, inhuge chariots, or on small hardy horses, changing their stationsas often as fresh pasture was required for their cattle. Exceptconstrained by necessity, they never entered any kind ofhouse, holding them in horror as so many tombs. They wereaccustomed from infancy to endure cold, hunger, and thirst.As the great boots they wore deprived them of all facility inmarching, they never fought on foot; but the skill with whichthey managed their horses and threw the javelin, made themmore formidable to the Germans than even the disciplined, butless ferocious, legions of Rome.
This was the rude race which, bursting into Europe in thesecond half of the fourth century, shook the whole barbarianworld to its center, and precipitated it upon the Roman Empire.The Goths fled before them, when they passed the Danube, theVandals when they crossed the Rhine. After a halt of half acentury in the center of Europe, the Huns put themselvesagain in motion.
Attila, the king of this people, constrained all the tribes wanderingbetween the Rhine and the Oural to follow him. Forsome time he hesitated upon which of the two empires heshould carry the wrath of heaven. Deciding upon the West,he passed the Rhine, the Moselle, and the Seine, and marchedupon Orleans. The populations fled before him in indescribableterror, for the Scourge of God, as he was called, left notone stone upon another wheresoever he passed. Metz andtwenty other cities had been destroyed. Troyes alone had beensaved by its bishop, Saint Loup. He wished to seize upon Orleans,the key of the southern provinces; and his innumerablearmy surrounded the city. Its bishop, St. Aignan, sustainedthe courage of the inhabitants by promising them a powerfulsuccor. tius, in fact, arrived with all the barbarian nationsencamped in Gaul, at the expense of which the new invasionwas made. Attila for the first time fell back; but in order tochoose a battle-field favorable for his cavalry, he halted in theCatalaunian plains near Mry-sur-Seine. There the terribleshock of battle took place. In the first onset the Franks, whoformed the vanguard of tius, fought with such animosity that15,000 Huns strewed the plain. But next day, when the greatmasses on both sides encountered, the bodies of 165,000 combatantswere left on that field of carnage. Attila was conquered.The allies, however, not daring to drive the wildHuns to despair, suffered Attila to retreat into Germany (451).In the year following he made amends for his defeat by an invasionof northern Italy, ravaging Aquileia, Milan, and othercities in a frightful manner, but died of an apoplectic stroke(453), soon after his return, and his empire fell with him, butnot the terrible remembrance of his name and of his cruelties.The Visigoths, whose king had perished in the fight, and theFranks of Meroveus, had had, with tius, the chief honor ofthat memorable day in the Catalaunian plains. For it had becomea question whether Europe should be German or Mongolian,whether the fierce Huns or the Germans should foundan empire on the ruins of that which was then crumbling.[F]
In imaginative literature the greatest writer of the latest periodis Heinrich Heine, whose lyrics have attracted general attention.The novel has acquired the same important place in Germanyas in England. Among the chief novelists are Freytag, theCountess Ida Hahn-Hahn, Paul Heyse, Spielhagen and Reuter.
Although air is continually evaporating water from the surfaceof the earth, and continually restoring it again by condensation,yet, on the whole and in the course of years, there seemsto be no sensible gain or loss of water in our seas, lakes, andrivers; so that the two processes of evaporation and condensationbalance each other.
It is evident, however, that the moisture precipitated at anymoment from the air is not at once evaporated again. The disappearanceof the water is due in part to evaporation, but onlyin part. A great deal of it goes out of sight in other ways.
The rain which falls upon the sea is the largest part of thewhole rainfall of the globe, because the surface of the sea isabout three times greater than that of the land. All this raingradually mingles with the salt water, and can then be no longerrecognized. It thus helps to make up for the loss which the seais always suffering by evaporation. For the sea is the greatevaporating surface whence most of the vapor of the atmosphereis derived.
On the other hand, the total amount of rain which falls uponthe land of the globe must be enormous. It has been estimated,for example, that about sixty-eight cubic miles of water annuallydescend as rain even upon the surface of the British Isles, andthere are many much more rainy regions. If you inquire aboutthis rain which falls upon the land, you will find that it doesnot at once disappear, but begins another kind of circulation.Watch what happens during a shower of rain. If the shower isheavy, you will notice little runs of muddy water coursing downthe streets or roads, or flowing out of the ridges of the fields.Follow one of the runs. It leads into some drain or brook, thatinto some larger stream, the stream into a river; and the river,if you follow it far enough, will bring you to the sea. Now thinkof all the brooks and rivers of the world, where this kind oftransport of water is going on, and you will at once see howvast must be the part of the rain which flows off the land intothe ocean.
