Angadi Theru (transl. Market Street) is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film written and directed by Vasanthabalan, starring debutant Mahesh and Anjali. The title refers to the Ranganathan Street in Chennai where the story takes place. The film features music jointly composed by Vijay Antony and G. V. Prakash Kumar. An Ayngaran International production, the film was launched on 11 February 2008 and released on 26 March 2010 to critical acclaim. The film was shortlisted for the Indian submissions for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film but lost to Peepli Live. It released in Telugu as Shopping Mall. The film was box-office success.
The film opens with a quiet, lonely looking Jose Paulo (Anirudh) (Mahesh) being driven to work by his father (Karunas). He calls on a client and brags about his fabulous apartment in the new beachside shopping mall in Chennai. While he is talking to his clients, a girl kills herself in his apartment while looking out of the window. He is caught in his lie and when he is asked about finding the corpse, Jose Paulo asks if the boy has seen the dead girl that he ordered to buy a gift. This is a colleague, Karthik (Nassar). They turn the corpse over to their friend, Sarathkumar Asuraj (Kuttapani), who owns a pawnshop, and the men proceed to attend to the problem of the gift. When Sarathkumar asks Jose Paulo to buy a handsome watch for his girlfriend Saru (Seetha), Jose Paulo is at a loss as he feels that buying expensive gifts for customers is unethical. He tries to impress Saru and says that it is not a gift but a promise of a gift. He uses the topic of time to attempt to seduce Saru. Jose Paulo is surprised to see his boss Arul (Pandiarajan), who is the husband of Karthik’s mother (Hema), and he is also attracted to Saru. Arul is asked to accompany Jose Paulo on his next visit to the mall. When Sarathkumar goes to expect the gift, he realizes that the watch is significant and sends someone to buy the diamond encrusted watch as a birthday gift for Saru.
